Andrea Mowry designs some of our favorite knitwear, and her newest pattern is no exception. This time around she's released The Traveler Hat; a super comfy beanie that comes in two different yarn weight options and 5 sizes! It's knit from the bottom up, beginning with an extra cozy folded brim, and then transitioning into a super squishy texture that's soothing and rhythmic to knit.

The Traveler Hat is designed in two classic bases from Brooklyn Tweed, featuring a worsted weight version knit up in Shelter and a fingering weight version knit up in Loft. Both yarns are a unique woolen spun 2ply strand - Andrea says "If you’ve heard me talk about yarn, then you probably know that my happy place is woolen spun yarns. Not only are they delightfully squishy and textured to knit with, but they are also very insulating thanks to having a core of air that is warmed by our own body temperature - creating the coziest of handknits!"

For the worsted weight version of The Traveler Hat, Andrea chose Shelter. The distinctive character of Targhee-Columbia wool shines in this versatile yarn. Shelter is a delicate 2ply, woolen spun lofty yarn that offers remarkable warmth and lightness. It has a dry, soft hand and a faintly rustic nature and garments knit from this yarn produce an even, light, plush fabric with a halo. Designed to be a workhorse yarn, Shelter is ideal for ribbing, textured stitch motifs, and cables.

For the fingering weight version of The Traveler Hat, Andrea chose Loft. Affectionately referred to as Shelter's smaller sibling, Loft is a 2-ply fingering weight yarn, gently woolen-spun from soft, springy American Targhee-Columbia wool. Loft has a unique bounce and airiness with a traditionally handcrafted appearance that's ideal for lightweight garments and accessories. Handle gently while knitting, then wet block to see Loft bloom into full beauty.

A note on production of Brooklyn Tweed yarns...

If you're familiar with Brooklyn Tweed, you already know they create timeless wool yarns that support textile production in the USA. That being said, COVID created many challenges in domestic yarn production for Brooklyn Tweed, and some of their bases have been hard to come by. We're thrilled to announce that Brooklyn Tweed's mills are up and running in full force again, so we'll be restocking all your favorite colors of Shelter and Loft as soon as they become available.
