Shetland Wool Week 2024
Oct 7th 2024
It's Shetland Wool Week! Shetland Wool Week is a world renowned celebration of Britain’s most northerly native sheep, the Shetland textile industry and the rural farming community on the islands. Shetland knitwear has a deserved respect gained from many generations of hard working knitters and crafters producing some of the finest lace and Fair Isle knitwear. While we wish that we could be there learning and celebrating in person, we'll have to settle for immersing ourselves in the pages of this year's Shetland Wool Week annual book.
The Shetland Wool Week Annual Volume 10 includes ten stunning patterns that highlight the versatility and beauty of Shetland wool, Fair Isle and lace knitting. It features inspiring photos from the Westside of Shetland, where unfazed sheep roam the landscape and breathtaking views abound. Whether you’re drawn to natural hues or bold colors, intricate lace or the careful positioning of Fair Isle motifs, these pages will inspire you to pick up your needles, raid your wool stashes, and throw yourself in the timeless art of knitting.

This year's official 2024 Shetland Wool Week knitting pattern is the Islesburgh Toorie; a traditional Fair Isle hat that has been exclusively designed by the Doull family as the SWW Patrons for 2024. This hat pattern (found within the pages of Volume 10) features a distinctive Shetland Ram motif, honoring their families involvement and family farm at Islesburgh, Northmavine.
If you're planning on joining in the Shetland Wool Week celebration and casting on this hat, we recommend using Jamieson's of Shetland 2ply Spindrift yarn. It's a versatile, beautifully plied 100% Shetland wool in a fingering weight traditionally used for Fair Isle knitting, and available in hundreds of heathered and natural shades. The design potential of Jamieson's of Shetland wool is without limit, a true Fair Isle knitter's dream.

We can't talk about Shetland Wool Week without mentioning one of our favorite Shetland-born knitwear designers, Gudrun Johnston. Earlier this year Gudrun released a special pattern, The Cloud Drift Cowl, in collaboration with Simply Shetland and Madelinetosh. The construction of the cowl takes inspiration from Shetland hap shawls, which is worked flat with yarn overs along one edge and then seamed together. Cloud Drift features mosaic knitting, a fun colorwork technique (without stranding!), all on a garter stitch background.
We have just a few limited edition Cloud Drift Cowl kits left, so grab one while you can! Each kit includes all the yarn you need to knit the cowl: 5 skeins of Jamieson’s Spindrift, 1 skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Silk Cloud in limited edition color Plivver, a golden Boxie Bag by Della Q and a postcard with free download of the pattern.
