New Year, New Hat
Dec 30th 2024
The New Year is almost here, and we think that's the perfect time to host a knit-a-long! For our "New Year, New Hat" KAL we'll be knitting Ysolda Teague's amazing Musselburgh. This famously swatchless pattern works with anything from a lace to DK weight; but our favorite way to knit a Musselburgh is with sport-weight stripes like the one featured above. Our version of this addicting knit calls for one skein each of Spincycle Dyed in the Wool and Spincycle Wilder.
We'll be hosting our Musselburgh cast-on party on Thursday, Jan 2nd, at 5:30pm - which also happens to be our first social Knit Night of 2025! Come down to the shop early to pick out yarn for your Musselburgh and then cast on with us while getting to know your local crafting community.
Let's talk more about the pattern...
The Musselburgh is the original swatchless hat: a double-layered beanie with 4-point crown shaping. In what is essentially a three step project you’ll start with a center-out cast-on and increase for the first crown; the next part is a beautifully meditative knit (perfect for those zoom calls!) of stockinette in the round; finally, you will finish off the hat by mirroring the initial shaping with decreases.
This simple canvas is perfect for exploring your creativity through yarn choice, stripes or color blocking. The hat is fully reversible, so working each half in a different color or stripe sequence can turn it into two completely different hats in one. Join our knit-a-long this January and discover for yourself why so many knitters have fallen in love with Musselburgh!

"How do I make a striped Musselburgh?"
It's as easy as 1,2,3!
1. Pick your Wilder base color first - it's available in two hues: Light Grey (a very light and pearlish grey), and Dark Grey which leans a bit brown.
2. Pick your Dyed in the Wool contrast color next - we currently have 75 colors in stock, and we encourage you to explore them all.
3. Start knitting! We alternated colors every other row, but feel free to experiment.

We're excited to announce that when the New Year arrives, we'll be staying open late every Thursday to host weekly Knit Nights down at the shop! We've been craving more time with our close knit community and look forward to opening our doors each week to invite local makers in, with the goal of providing a welcoming space full of creative inspiration for knitters, crocheters, and handworkers of all types.
