Light Linen for Summer Layers
Jul 30th 2024
How do you feel about knitting with linen? We know some people shy away from this fantastic fiber due to its crisp feel in the skein, but we think you should consider trying it out for your next project. Linen yarn tends to soften with each wash, making the finished knitted pieces more and more comfortable over time. Additionally, it's known for its durability and strength, making it a great choice for long-lasting knitted items. Added bonus? Linen has natural moisture-wicking properties, meaning you'll want to wear your finished objects in the heat of summer!
One of our favorite linen yarns for summer knitting is Quince & Co. Sparrow. This unassuming little skein is beautiful in its simplicity. Sparrow is a fingering weight yarn spun in Italy from organic linen grown in Belgium. We love this yarn for lightweight tanks and tees, but it's also great for knitting or crocheting market bags!
Argil by Clare Lakewood The Argil tank is a casual summer top with a front tie detail for elevated style. This piece is worked flat beginning at the back lower hem, and features a unique construction to keep you interested while you knit. Argil uses two colors of Sparrow, and we encourage you to explore color combos and make this OOAK! |
Cullum by Isabell Kraemer The Cullum tee is a breezy top embellished with lacy details at the neck and hem, and an easy fit that works with everything in your wardrobe. Worked seamlessly from the top down, Cullum begins with shoulders shaped with short rows before joining to work in the round for the body. |
Kestrel, the big sibling to Quince & Co's Sparrow, is a fresh take on a simple linen yarn. They took the same Belgium-grown organic linen that was used in Sparrow, and spun it in a ribbon structure. Kestrel knits up QUICK at 3½ to 4 stitches to the inch, and its flat surface adds a slight texture to simple knit and purl stitches. We think the best thing about it is its incredible drape. Like all things linen, woven or knitted, Kestrel only gets better as you wash and wear it.
We enjoy working with Kestrel when we want that instant satisfaction of a quick project, and Ursa Minor (featured below) is a speedy little summer top. We also love the Quick Sand cardigan for its elegant drape and sophisticated silhouette, plus it's a great layering piece for cooler summer evenings.
