A New Yarn for Autumn
Sep 24th 2024
Blue Sky Fibers just released Prairie, a single ply brushed Suri yarn made from 100% alpaca. Prairie’s unique blend consists of 53% Suri alpaca/47% baby Huacaya alpaca, combining softness and structure to create a magnificent yarn. Light, airy and soft, this fingering weight yarn is an excellent alternative for laceweight mohair. Prairie mixes beautifully with a variety of yarns to create a feathery, soft halo; or you can just knit it on its own for light and airy garments and accessories.
The Prairie palette is driven by moody colors with contrasting accents, inspired by deep, dark midnight skies with hints of twinkling stars. In addition to the classic palette, Blue Sky Fibers collaborated with Malabrigo and released 7 limited edition hand dyed colorways of Prairie; six of your favorite classic Malabrigo colors and one new custom color called Cedar.

"Come on a faraway journey with us, to the inky dark skies of our world and beyond. Look up and stargaze, take in the infinite details and beauty of our vast night sky. You will see a cohesive collection that explores the night sky and beyond. With many cowls, shawls, wraps, and sweaters, this collection will encourage both knit and crochet makers to start a new project. "
The Blue Sky Fibers Autumn/Winter 2024 Collection features 13 patterns, six of which were designed using Prairie. We love the stunning simplicity of the Stardust Wrap designed by Bobbi IntVeld (featured above, right). This beginner friendly wrap requires 3 skeins of Prairie and is knit on the bias in stockinette stitch with a loose gauge creating a beautiful, ethereal fabric.
If you're looking for the perfect project to try Blue Sky Fibers Prairie, we recommend the light and airy Carina Cowl designed by Bobbi IntVeld (featured above, left). Knit with just one skein, this eye-catching trellis stitch cowl is full of beautiful texture.

One of our favorite things about Prairie is how well it plays with other Blue Sky yarns. The Lynx Wrap by Virginia Sattler-Reimer (shown above) is knit with Prairie and Woolstok Worsted held together throughout, creating a hearty fabric that offers both warmth and beauty. The generous length of this stunning striped wrap will provide endless styling options, and the neutral palette works with any wardrobe.

Another great yarn pairing for garments and accessories is Prairie and Woolstok Light. The Saturnalia Sweater by Mary Pranica (featured above, left) combines the soft halo of Prairie and the beautiful stitch definition of Woolstok Light to form “rings” around this top-down raglan sweater. Varying stripe widths are punctuated by rounds of garter stitch that add texture and visual interest to this fun wardrobe staple.
The Orion Cowl by Michael Vloedman (featured above, right) is a cozy moebius that uses Woolstok Light and Prairie held together throughout. Offering directions for both the advanced beginner and intermediate knitter, and with endless color combos to select from, this stockinette cowl will be a new favorite.
