Yarn Journal Issue 02 Autumn/Winter 2022
Description
The Journal of Scottish Yarns is a new biannual journal focusing on community, history, culture and creativity of textiles in Scotland.
Inside Issue 2, you'll find ten patterns with full instructions, inspired by autumn leaves shown in the glorious colors and textured stitches of the chosen Scottish yarns:
- Knitting: 2 jumpers, 2 knitted shawls, a beanie hat, Highland cow toy
- Crochet: 2 jumpers, a pair of slipper socks
- Embroidery: a sampler based on Mandy Tait’s patterned sheep illustrations
The features look at the history of tartan in this 200th anniversary of its ‘modern invention’, and an interpretation from the other side of the world, New Zealand, in ‘Woven Identities: Tartan meets Koru’.
The stories of several Scottish textiles people and places are also included: Di Gilpin, Black Isle Yarns, The Silly Sheep Fibre Company (in a journey from the Outer Hebrides to Shetland via a few breeds of sheep!), hand-spinner Jennie Howes and how the now King Charles III has been working to promote textile skills via his Princes Trust, based in Dumfries and Galloway.
