UPDATE: Resistance in Stitches
Feb 16th 2026
A few weeks ago we started knitting red hats and sent out an email to rally our community. We said we would cover the cost of the pattern for anyone who purchased red yarn to make a hat; and since then, we have sold 205 Melt the ICE Hat patterns (and sold out of red yarn!). This contributed over $1,000 to Needle and Skein's donation fund, which has now exceeded half a million dollars.
Additionally, we said we would match the amount we spent on hat patterns and make our own donation. This week, we made a donation of $1035 to Kids in Need of Defense. KIND works to ensure unaccompanied children receive fair and humane treatment throughout their journey to safety by advocating for policies and actions.
We believe that fiber arts are more than just a hobby, they're a means of expressing our courage and resilience. Please join us in casting on a Melt the ICE Hat in solidarity with our friends in Minnesota, and around the country. For those of you who missed your chance to get red yarn before we sold out after our last email, we wanted to let you know that a few restocks have arrived down at the shop. If you're planning to join us knitting more Melt the ICE hats, we encourage you to act quickly before we sell out again!
"In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design."
