Try Your Hands at Visible Mending

Try Your Hands at Visible Mending

Sep 24th 2025

Are you familiar with the term "visible mending"? Visible mending is more than just a repair technique; it's a way to embrace sustainability that transforms flaws into a focal point, celebrating those imperfections through creativity. Visible mending often uses colorful threads, contrasting fabrics, and creative stitching to extend the life of your chosen garment (and reduce textile waste!).

If your interest is piqued, we're here to encourage you to join our community of fiber enthusiasts who are passionate about making fashion more sustainable! In addition to expanding our selection of books and supplies to help you on your mending journey, we're thrilled to announce guest instructor Paula Hyatt will be teaching a Visible Mending class down at the shop in October. Click the link below to sign up, and give your old jeans a new life while learning tips and tricks to help fight the wastefulness of fast fashion.

If you're new to visible mending and embarking on your journey from the comfort of your own home, we highly recommend trying Wrenbirdarts Washable Mending Transfers (featured above in set #4). These ingenious little sheets are an easy way to transfer a beautiful stitch pattern onto your garment without the need for rulers, pencils, tracing paper or an iron. Stick the transfer to the area to be mended, stitch the pattern on and then rinse off the sticker to reveal your precise stitched pattern - easy as 1, 2, 3!

Many of the supplies we stock for visible mending overlap with those used in the art of Sashiko. Sashiko is a form of decorative stitching from Japan that was traditionally used to mend and reinforce fabric. The stitches are often arranged in intricate patterns, creating beautiful and functional designs. Sashiko has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with many people embracing it as a way to add unique touches to their clothing and home decor.

Whether you are looking to explore visible mending or traditional Sashiko, we offer a variety of threads, needles, thimbles, sashiko cloth and books to help you get inspired.

For those of you who live locally, we're also offering an Intro to Sashiko class this October! In this class, participants will learn how to prepare their fabric and stitch both Hitomezashi and Moyozashi stitch patterns. We will also cover how to start and end our stitching without knots, how to make efficient stitches with a palm thimble, how the hana fukin sampler is used in daily life and a brief overview of sashiko as a form of sustainable mending and fiber art. The class will be taught by guest artist and instructor, Paula Hyatt.
