Shetland Wool Week 2025
Oct 1st 2025
It's Shetland Wool Week! Shetland Wool Week is a world renowned celebration of Britain’s most northerly native sheep, the Shetland textile industry and the rural farming community on the islands. Shetland knitwear has a deserved respect gained from many generations of hard working knitters and crafters producing some of the finest lace and Fair Isle knitwear. While we wish that we could be there learning and celebrating in person, we'll have to settle for immersing ourselves in the pages of this year's Shetland Wool Week annual book.
The Shetland Wool Week Annual Volume 11 includes eight stunning patterns that highlight the versatility and beauty of Shetland wool. From a cozy jacket to the finest lace, from bold Fair Isle colors to subtle textures, the designs highlight the remarkable versatility of Shetland wool. Alongside the knitting, there are shared stories that honor the heritage breeds, agricultural traditions and the deep, personal connections we hold with knitwear. Whether you knit every stitch or simply admire the craft, this Annual will bring inspiration and joy.

This year's official 2025 Shetland Wool Week knitting pattern is the Aal Ower Toorie; a traditional Fair Isle hat that has been exclusively designed by the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers as the SWW Patrons for 2025. The inspiration for this hat pattern (found within the pages of Volume 11) came from the Chris Morphet "Allover" exhibition at the Shetland Museum. They wanted to achieve the same striking patterns and vibrant colors of vintage Fair Isle knitwear, and used a 1930s graph as the basis for the hat.
If you're planning on joining in the Shetland Wool Week celebrations by casting on this hat, we made it easy for you by making a kit of the version featured above. The kit includes all the yarn you need to knit the hat (8 balls of Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift in complementary colors) and the Aal Ower Toorie pattern.
The patterns featured above (clockwise from top left) are Mirkenin Hot Water Bottle Cover, Green Meadows Gloves, Osla Cowl, and the Gronsteinn Vest - all of which can be found within the pages of the Shetland Wool Week Annual Volume 11 book.
If you're planning on knitting any of the stunning projects featured here, we recommend using Jamieson's of Shetland 2ply Spindrift yarn. It's a versatile, beautifully plied 100% Shetland wool in a fingering weight traditionally used for Fair Isle knitting, and available in hundreds of heathered and natural shades. The design potential of Jamieson's of Shetland wool is without limit, a true Fair Isle knitter's dream.

One of our favorite Shetland inspired knits is the Voar Neckerchief by Gudrun Johnston, and we currently have stock of 4 different kit colorways curated by Gudrun herself. Voar is a nod to traditional Shetland shawl knitting with its stripey Old Shell lace patterning. It can be worn as either a neckerchief or headscarf, and with a single kit you can make two and give one to a friend (by swapping the shade placement around, you will have enough yarn in the kit for two).
Each Voar kit includes all the yarn you need to knit the neckerchief: 5 balls of Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift yarn in complementary colors, a pattern postcard with free download code and a custom Della Q Oh Snap bag with a brand new piece of artwork featuring a flower-crown adorned Shetland lamb.
Sample featured above is knit with the Voar Neckerchief kit in Palette 1
