New Yarns from Rosa Pomar
Sep 16th 2025
We know we've introduced you to A LOT of new brands lately, but there's still more to share as they just keep arriving by the boxload (and really, we're not mad about it!). The most recent collection of yarn to land on our shelves is Rosa Pomar; a brand that produces yarn made exclusively from Portuguese wool, created in collaboration with small breeders associations and shepherds. All of Rosa Pomar's heritage wool yarns are minimally processed, non-superwash, free of silicone based softeners and animal friendly (mulesing is not practiced in Porutugal).
While we've stocked up on several bases from Rosa Pomar, we wanted to start by gushing about their newest yarn, Matiz. Matiz is an Aran weight, 100% wool yarn, produced from the wool of Portuguese native breeds, Campaniça and Merino Preto. This yarn is worsted spun (just like their popular Mondim and Vovó bases), with a pleasant squishy touch that makes it absolutely perfect for warm sweaters and cozy cardigans. Matiz is well suited to textured knitting such as brioche and cables, and is currently available in three natural hues and seven dyed, heathered shades.

To celebrate the launch of Matiz, Rosa Pomar just released Salomão, a darling little sheep motif hat. This pattern calls for two balls of Matiz in contrasting colors (1 ball of each color), and we heard a rumor that you can actually get two hats from those two balls, just reverse your colors! Added bonus? Rosa herself insists that knitting one of these hats up takes just four hours to make - we'd call that a pretty quick knit! |
Brusca is a non-superwash breed and flock specific, DK weight yarn from Rosa Pomar. Brusca is made with a blend of 50% Saloia and 50% Merino Branco and Merino Preto non-mulesing wool from free range sheep. Saloia is the native sheep breed to the region of Lisbon and Setúbal. It is well documented since the 19th century, as its wool was one of the finest available in Portugal.
Brusca is currently in stock in 17 hues, with shades A, B, and C being natural (undyed). We love this versatile yarn for cozy cardigans and hats to ward off the winter chill.

Vovó (Portuguese for Grandma) is a versatile and hard wearing, non-superwash sport weight yarn made entirely from fine Portuguese wool, mainly from Serra da Estrela sheep. It is a wonderful choice for sweaters and cardigans intended for daily wear. Vovó is currently in stock in 12 colors, with shades 01, 20, 60 and 80 being undyed.

Last in our Rosa Pomar lineup is Mondim, a non-superwash, fingering weight yarn made from fine Portuguese wool. It is named after a Portuguese village once famous for its sock knitting cottage industry. Shades 100, 300 and 500 are natural (undyed). Most batches of Mondim are exclusively made from the wool of native Campaniça sheep.
