Learn to Knit Brioche

Learn to Knit Brioche

Feb 23rd 2026

For our upcoming, sold out Spring Retreat we'll be hosting Lavanya Patricella, who's been teaching knitting since 2010 and specializes in the captivating brioche stitch. While she's in town, she'll also be teaching a Bulky Brioche Slouch Hat Workshop down at the shop - and we'd love for you to join us!

Designed with the beginner brioche knitter in mind, the Bulky Brioche Slouch Hat uses 2 colors of bulky weight yarn and features simple, in the round, 2-color brioche. It has standard decrease shaping at the top without brioche decreases and knits up quick, which means you'll be able to finish it after learning just the brk and brp stitch.

Lavanya's Bulky Brioche Slouch Hat Workshop will be held in person down at the shop on Thursday, April 2nd, from 10am-1pm. Note that this class has a 15 person capacity, and we imagine it will fill up quickly - so don't hesitate to sign up before it sells out.

If you're planning on taking Lavanya's Bulky Brioche Slouch Hat Workshop (or just wanting to knit the hat on your own!) you'll need 1 skein each in 2 contrasting colors of Malabrigo Chunky. This squishy treat of a yarn has a lovely, smooth texture with semisolid hand dyed colors, making it perfect for bulky cables and bold textures. Each skein of Malabrigo Chunky has 104 yards of deliciously soft Merino wool goodness, and we currently have over 20 colors in stock.

If you're unable to join us for Lavanya's workshop, don't fret - you can still learn Brioche with us! Our own Erin Duffy will be teaching a Beginners Brioche Cowl class on March 20th, from 5:30-7:30pm. Learn the popular Brioche knitting technique while knitting a bulky weight cowl in 2 colors (featured above).

This simple cowl requires 2 skeins of chunky weight yarn in contrasting colors - Erin knit this sample using 1 skein of Malabrigo Chunky paired with 1 skein of Spincycle Plump yarn. You can find more information or sign up for the Beginners Brioche Cowl class here.
