Are you Ready to Doodle?!

Are you Ready to Doodle?!

Aug 4th 2025

Not everyone knits during the summer, but autumn is right around the corner - and that means it's time to dust off your needles and find your knitting mojo again! If you need some inspiration, we have just the thing for you.... a Design Your Own Doodle Cowl Knit-a-Long!

This fun KAL features Pacific Knit Co.'s Doodle Patterns. These designs are modern, modular "micro motif" colorwork charts that allow you to design and knit exactly what you want (within a super easy to follow structure). For this Knit-a-Long you'll be able to choose between 2 styles of cowl patterns to create your very own one-of-a-kind Doodle Cowl.

The Doodle Framework
Learn to design and knit custom colorwork in 3 easy steps!

Step 1Choose your pattern

For this KAL you can choose between two base cowl pattern options - the Doodle Cowl (a great first colorwork project because of its simple construction) or the Infinity Cowl (worked in the round as a tube and grafted together). These patterns are also both available in the Doodle Knit Directory book or in a Doodle Card Deck... you get to choose!

Step 2: Choose Your Yarn

Both doodle cowl patterns call for DK weight yarn. We recommend grabbing a main color and a few accents to get started. Here's a round up of some of our favorite yarn options for doodling, but feel free to use any DK weight yarn. We suggest sticking with wool and wool blends, as they bloom well when blocked and create a consistent fabric that really makes your colorwork sing.

Erin will be hosting this KAL, and she recently finished this Doodle Infinity Cowl using The Fibre Co. Acadia yarn. Acadia is a stunning 2-ply yarn with an extremely soft hand. A subtle tweed effect created by the silk noil is combined with a heathered base, and then overdyed in the duotones that the Fibre Co is known for, creating incredible depth of color in every skein.

We currently have 30 colors of Acadia in stock, so you have plenty of options for creating your one-of-a-kind cowl.

Step 3: Start Knitting!

Pick your first chart and first colors and simply start your pattern. You can even change up your color combos with every new motif.

To kick off this KAL, we'll be hosting a "Design Your Own Doodle Cowl" party down at the shop Thursday, August 7th at 5:30pm. We'll have our talented staff on hand to help you choose your yarn, colors and sort through hundreds of mix-and-match micro charts to make the doodle cowl of your dreams.

Perhaps your head is spinning and you're wondering where to start? If you won't be able to join us in person, just buy your favorite Doodle Deck or a copy of The Doodle Knit Directory book by Jamie Lomax. This practical guide to 'doodling' with knitted colorwork designs contains both cowl pattern options for this KAL.

Choose your favorite charts from the 200 different designs included in the book, and then mix and match them to create a unique-to-you project. You can then combine them in any way you like, change the colorways, and generally have fun 'doodling' with them. Don't forget to pick out some yarn from the options listed above, and get ready to cast on with us August 7th.

Note: In addition to both cowl patterns, this book also includes 7 other base patterns - so after the KAL you can continue your doodle journey with everything from scarves to socks!
