New Spring Yarn and Collection from Shibui!

Shibui Zephyr Cardigan While we spend a fair amount of time oogling cables and colorwork, there is something about a cushy, comfy sweatshirt that is perfect for weekend wear. Joji applies our love of handknits to her simple new designs that are wonderful first sweater projects, while still being enjoyable knits for experienced knitters.

Today is the launch of the Shibui Knits SS18 collection, and it is not an exaggeration to call it the best one yet. Shibui's specialty is fashion forward trends that remain classic and wearable, and these pieces showcase their new Fern yarn in all the right ways. Fern is a 100% organic cotton yarn that is soft, supple, and saturated with springtime colors. In this collection it is used both on its own, and in tandem with other Shibui yarns, highlighting its versatility.

Zephyr is the elusive summer cardigan we all want to wear. The dramatic shape is breezy and modern, and the slim fitting sleeves keep it elegant. The body of Zephyr is knit in Shibui Twig and the sleeves are knit in Fern, providing a subtle variation in texture on a single color garment.

Mirage is an eye-catching beauty with a customization option: shown here is an easy wear tee version, but there is also a sleeveless version for a dressier look. The delicate A-line shaping finishes with a sheer panel of Silk Cloud for an unforgettable effect. Both the Mirage Tee and the Mirage Shell are available in kits.

A summer weight vest is just the thing for adding light layers to cotton dresses or linen trousers. Areca begins at the hem with two strands of Shibui Twig, then transitions to a strand of Twig held with a strand of Fern after the lateral braid. At a large and open gauge, this tunic length vest has excellent drape and a feminine curve, making it an easy addition to any wardrobe.

This bias knit scarf pattern comes free with your purchase, and is a delightful way to test out the new Shibui Fern yarn. The small nupps give visual interest and break up the long stockinette stitch scarf that is knit on a bias.

Did You Know...
How to Mix:

Shibui Knits makes some of our favorite yarns, and they are all wonderful knit alone. However one of the special things about Shibui yarns is that they are designed to be mix-and-matched! Let's use an example from today's newsletter: The Areca Vest.

Areca was designed to be a mid-light weight summer vest. Using a strand of Fern and Twig held together with a size 9 needle, you get a stitch gauge of 4.25/inch. But what if you live in a colder climate and want a warmer vest? Or what if you don't want to work with cotton? Here are some other options for your vest: you could use to achieve that same stitch gauge:

  • Maai + Pebble creates a luxury plush and tweedy fabric that would be warm and cozy, 4.25/inch
  • Reed + Twig brings even more linen to the mix for a comfortable, warm climate accessory, 4.5/inch
  • Birch + Pebble is a lightweight wool blend that won't overheat you, but makes an excellent fall layer, 4.5/inch
