Stay Warm with Hand Knit Hoods

Stay Warm with Hand Knit Hoods

Knitted Hoods

As we're settling into deep winter, we find ourselves reaching for our coziest layers to face the chill of each day. For those of you who find yourself constantly searching around for both your hand knit hat and scarf, have you considered knitting a hood?!

If you follow high fashion, there's a rising trend of knitted hoods, and we are 100% here for it! Not only are knitted hoods stylish, but they also provide extra warmth and protection from the cold. So, if you're tired of always searching for both your hat and scarf, why not try knitting a single cozy accessory to keep you warm all winter long?

Sophie Hood

One of the top Ravelry patterns this week is the new Sophie Hood from the fabulous PetiteKnit. The Sophie Hood is worked in one piece from tip to tip. This elegantly simple design is worked flat, back and forth, in garter stitch with built-in i-cord edges. The hood is shaped using increases and decreases, and the back is sewn together at the end using mattress stitch.

We recommend knitting your Sophie Hood in Isager Soft yarn, a beautifully soft, fluffy blend of alpaca and organic cotton. We love the cozy halo of this versatile yarn, not to mention the added warmth from the alpaca fibers. If you're looking for a wider range of colors, Juniper Moon Farm Cotton + Merino yarn would also work great for this hood.

How much yarn do I need to knit the Sophie Hood?

Sizes: S (M) L

Length from hood to tip: approx. 40.25 (50.5) 60.75"

Yarn Requirements: 4 (5) 6 balls of Isager Soft
OR 3 (3) 4 balls of JMF Cotton + Merino

My Jose Hood

Next up we have My Jose Hood by NORgardknitters. My Jose Hood is a fusion between a warm hood and a soft scarf. With the hood down, it functions as a beautiful scarf with a bow made of I-cord ties. This hood is worked from the top down. The top is knitted first, and then stitches are picked up along the edges. The hood is worked back and forth, with increases along the front edges to change the shape from a hood to a scarf. I-cords finish every edge and make the ties at each end.

We think Woolkfolk Tov would really make this pattern shine. This 12ply aran weight yarn is 100% Ultimate Merino which is some of the softest Merino available, and comes in a palette of soft earth tones.

Height of the hood: approximately 18.75"
Total width of the scarf (without the ties): 68.5"

Alex Hood

Last on our list of favorites is the Alex Hood by Pernille Larsen. The Alex Hood is worked back and forth in a simple 2x2 rib pattern, and is knit using 1 strand of Knitting for Olive Merino held together with 1 strand of Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair. You start by working the first half of the scarf from one tip to the midpoint of the finished scarf before working the second half from the other tip to the midpoint. You then graft the two pieces together at midback and pick up stitches for the hood. The hood is subsequently worked in the same 2x2 rib pattern and shaped with decreases and increases for the perfect fit.

The combo of Knitting for Olive Merino & Soft Silk Mohair creates a cozy, yet lightweight, fabric with a soft halo. We love the chic feel of this DK weight accessory, and wanted to mention you could always substitute Compatible Cashmere for the mohair if you want a smoother finished fabric without a halo.

Sizes: One size

Wingspan (scarf): approx. 70.75”

Yarn Requirements: 3 balls Knitting for Olive Merino + 3 balls Soft Silk Mohair
OR 3 balls Knitting for Olive Merino + 4 balls Compatible Cashmere
