Say hello to Quince & Co. Sparrow and Kestrel
May 5th 2025
How do you feel about knitting with linen? We know some people shy away from this fantastic fiber due to its crisp feel in the skein, but we think you should consider trying it out for your next project. Linen yarn softens with each wash, making the finished knitted pieces more and more comfortable over time. Additionally, it's known for its durability and strength, making it a great choice for long-lasting garments and accessories. Added bonus? Linen has natural moisture-wicking properties, meaning you'll want to wear your finished projects all of this season and into the next, even in the heat of summer!
One of our favorite linen yarns for spring and summer knitting is Quince & Co. Sparrow. This unassuming little skein is beautiful in its simplicity. Sparrow is a fingering weight yarn spun in Italy from organic linen grown in Belgium. We love this yarn for lightweight sweaters and tees, but it's also great for knitting summery lace shawls!

Scarborough Shrug by Pam Allen This gorgeous, shell patterened shrug is knit flat from the bottom up. The CO and BO edges are seamed together to form sleeves and back opening, then you pick up stitches around the armholes and back opening to work in the round. This piece is perfect for layering over sun dresses when you need a little extra coverage. |
Edie is a simple tee worked with raglan increases from the top down. First you work back and forth until the V-neck shaping is complete, then continue in the round until the end. The textured stripes help add some interest while knitting, and short-row shaping is used to round off the bottom and give a casual finish. |
Kestrel, the big sibling to Quince & Co's Sparrow, is a fresh take on a simple linen yarn. They took the same Belgium-grown organic linen that was used in Sparrow, and spun it in a ribbon structure. Kestrel knits up QUICK at 3.5 to 4 stitches to the inch, and its flat surface adds a slight texture to simple knit and purl stitches. We think the best thing about this yarn is its incredible drape. Like all things linen, woven or knitted, Kestrel only gets better as you wash and wear it.
We enjoy working with Kestrel when we want a quicker project with a bit more weight. Davis (shown below in Urchin) is a simple top with elegant drape and a sophisticated silhouette; plus it's a great piece for cooler summer evenings. If you're looking for a more engaging knit, give the Elorie top a try. Elorie (shown below in Bordeaux) has a modern shape, and each pattern repeat is easily memorized and intuitively progresses throughout the deep, circular yoke as you knit.
